As a U.S. citizen living abroad, you can claim the child tax credit, but there are some important differences from how you would file in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-create-block-hrb-expat-ways-to-file\" class=\"wp-block-create-block-hrb-expat-ways-to-file\"><div class=\"wtf-column wtf-column--left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/expatonline.hrblock.com\/wizard\/introduction\/2021?sat_track=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-track=\"{'loc':'b', 'nm':'start file yourself'}\">File on my own<\/a><\/div><div class=\"wtf-column wtf-column--right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/expat.hrblock.com\/s\/login\/SelfRegister?sat_track=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-track=\"{'loc':'b', 'nm':'start file with an advisor'}\">File with an advisor<\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Normally, you could claim both the nonrefundable and refundable portions of the child tax credit. However, while living abroad, your eligibility can differ:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You\u2019re not able to claim the\u00a0<em>refundable<\/em>\u00a0portion if you also claim the foreign earned income exclusion. This means the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/filing\/credits\/child-tax-credit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">child tax credit<\/a>\u00a0by itself will not lead to a refund on your return.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, If the foreign income exclusion is not claimed, and for instance, you claim the foreign tax credit instead, then the child tax credit may still lead to a refund. The refundable portion of the credit increases from <strong>$1,600 to $1,700 for the tax year 2024.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can still use the nonrefundable portion of the child tax credit a U.S. citizen living abroad to lower the tax you owe on your U.S. federal return.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The rules around the child tax credit afford you the ability to claim up to a $2,000 credit per qualifying child on your tax return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on your overall situation, either the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/expat-tax-preparation\/resource-center\/filing\/foreign-tax-credit-limitations-rules-for-u-s-expats\/\">foreign tax credit<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/expat-tax-preparation\/resource-center\/income\/foreign-earned-income-exclusion-for-u-s-expats\/\">foreign earned income exclusion<\/a>&nbsp;may be a better option for you. Taxpayers can claim this credit for children who are too old for the child tax credit, as well as for non-child dependents. There is no SSN requirement to claim this credit, so taxpayers can claim the credit for children with an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/filing\/personal-tax-planning\/what-is-an-itin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN)<\/a>&nbsp;or an Adoption Tax Identification Number (ATIN) if they otherwise qualify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-about-the-child-care-dependent-tax-credit-requirements\">What about the child care\/dependent tax credit requirements?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, expats are also able to claim this credit for a qualifying child or dependent. The normal child care tax credit requirements apply even if you\u2019re abroad. You might qualify for a credit for the child care expenses paid to a foreign care provider so that you (and your spouse) can work or look for work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, eligibility rules for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/filing\/credits\/child-and-dependent-care-credit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">child care tax credit<\/a>&nbsp;state that you must have earned income on your U.S. tax return.
