Refund Transfer FAQs
Refund Transfer is a product that can be purchased with your tax prep and offers several benefits both during and after your tax filing service:
- Refund tracking notifications: Opt-in for a daily text or email with updates on your refund status at no extra charge (standard message and data rates may apply).
- Convenience: Pay your tax prep fees and other authorized payments directly from your refund after all services are complete.
- Security: Refunds are deposited into a secure temporary Refund Transfer Account with Pathward®, N.A., Member FDIC. Remaining funds are disbursed as directed after services are complete.
- Access and speed: After authorized payments are made from your Refund Transfer Account, the remaining funds are typically paid faster than waiting for a paper check from the IRS. Don’t have a bank account? No problem — you can choose to have funds loaded onto an Emerald Card or deposited into a Spruce account for quick access to an electronic banking system.
You’ll have the option to purchase a Refund Transfer during your tax prep service after providing information about your tax situation.
After finishing the tax return portion of your service, you’ll be asked if you’re interested in any tax or financial products. Provide the appropriate consents and the system will determine if you’re eligible for a Refund Transfer.
No, Refund Transfer doesn’t speed up the IRS’s process of reviewing, approving, and disbursing your refund. However, once the IRS sends your refund, the remaining funds in your Refund Transfer Account are usually disbursed faster than waiting for a paper check from the IRS.
Starting in 2025, anyone who purchases a Refund Transfer Account during tax prep will receive an electronic statement in their MyBlock account.
You can find your statement in your MyBlock account under Finances. Note that you may need to prove your identity before you can view it. If you filed your taxes jointly, you may need to first set up a MyBlock account to access your tax documents and electronic statement.
To view your Refund Transfer Account statement, you may need to verify your identity. If you have a MyBlock account but haven’t done this yet, you’ll see the Secure Access option at the top of your MyBlock home screen. This is highly recommended and will give you access to your tax returns, upcoming appointments, Refund Transfer Account statements, and more.
Refund Transfer Account statements are available in your MyBlock account around the first day of each month and will show the previous month’s transactions. For example, your January statement will be available around Feb. 1st, and your February statement will be available around March 1st.
Monthly statements are only delivered electronically to your MyBlock account. If you need a paper copy, you can print one from your MyBlock account or call customer service at 1-800-472-5625 to have one sent to the address on file.
No, your Refund Transfer Account number is different from the bank account number. The Refund Transfer Account is a temporary account where your refund is deposited by the IRS or state. Once all authorized payments are made, any remaining balance will be sent electronically to the bank account you designated during your tax prep. If you chose to receive the remaining funds by check, it will be processed and sent to your address on file.
No, you should not use the Refund Transfer Account number for other deposits. This account is only meant to receive your refund(s) and deduct specific payments you authorized during your tax prep. It’s not intended for personal use. The bank may reject or return any other deposit or debit transactions to or from this account.
