I just submitted my e-file return, but noticed a mistake. Can I cancel the e-file, amend the mistake and send a correct tax return?

No. You can’t cancel the return after it has been e-filed.

If you need to change any information in the return, you can only make changes to your return if the IRS rejects it.

If the IRS accepts your return, you must use Form 1040-X to file an amended return to fix the mistake.

To prepare your amended correct tax return:

First, check that your return is exactly as you originally filed it and no changes have been made. Make sure you have a copy of your original return in a printed or .pdf form. You won’t be able to get another copy of the original return once you amend it.

Then:

  1. Go to Overview on the top navigation bar.
  2. Under Tax Filing Resources on the bottom right, click File an amended return. This option is available after your return is e-filed and accepted.
  3. Follow the steps to amend your return.

You might owe a balance due after amending your return. If so, you should pay it by the tax deadline to avoid penalties and interest.
