Why you received IRS Letter 545
- The IRS received more than one tax return for you or your spouse for the same tax year.
- The IRS recalculated your taxes.
- Letter 545 was sent to inform you of the changes made to your tax return with the married filing separate filing status. You have the right to dispute the changes. The notice also advises you that you may be able file an amended return using the married filing joint filing status.

Notice deadline: 30 days
If you miss the deadline: The IRS will assume the calculations shown in the examination report are correct. If you owe a balance as a result of these changes, the IRS will send you a bill.
