IRS Definition

Your notice or letter will explain the reason for the contact and give you instructions on how to handle the issue.

For most taxpayers, IRS notices are not quite that simple. The IRS sends notices for a wide variety of reasons. The IRS may have a question about a tax return you filed, potential or actual identity theft, an unpaid balance, or an unfiled tax return. Some notices just give information or updates and do not need a response. Other notices have a deadline that you must respond by to avoid negative consequences such as collection action or the loss of your right to appeal an IRS decision.
