Paying taxes online can provide ease and convenience. If you plan to pay your taxes online, you can make your tax payments in any of these ways:

  • Pay taxes online — Set up a direct debit for your payment from your bank account. Go to www.irs.gov.
  • Mail — Complete Form 1040-ES and go to www.irs.gov for the address to mail your payment.
  • Phone — Call 888-PAY-1040 to use the IRS pay-by-phone system. A convenience charge will apply. You can charge your payment to one of these credit cards:
    • American Express
    • Discover
    • MasterCard
    • VISA

File Tax Extension Online

You can file a tax extension online using Form 4868, which lets you request an automatic extension of time to file your income tax return. You can file for an extension with our online program.

Filing your federal tax extension, online or through mail, doesn’t extend the time to pay a balance due. This is also true of a state tax extension done online or on paper. You must pay the money you owe the IRS by April 16, 2024. The extension only extends the time you have to file your return without penalties.

The extension will let you file your return by October 15, 2024.

Depending on the state, filing a federal extension online or on paper automatically files for the state extension.
