However, if you wait to file your tax return close to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/deadlines-and-extensions\/tax-deadlines\/\">filing deadline<\/a>, it may take longer to process because more returns are filed at this time. As the tax deadline gets closer, the IRS gets more tax returns, which creates a backup and slows down processing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>How you file:<\/strong> How long it takes to get your IRS tax refund also depends on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/filing-options-and-products\/\">way you file taxes<\/a>. To get your refund sooner, e-file your income tax return. You can also check the status of your tax refund by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Using H&amp;R Block refund status tool:<\/strong> Track the status of your federal tax refund using our \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/wheres-my-refund\/\">Where\u2019s My Refund?\u201d<\/a> tool. Note that you cannot check the status of your e-filed return until 24 hours after filing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Calling the IRS: <\/strong>Call 800-829-4477 for the IRS TeleTax System or 800-829-1954 the IRS Refund Hotline. If the IRS has processed your return, the system will tell you the date your refund will be sent. (Note: TeleTax\u2019s refund statuses are updated every weekend. Then, click on the \u201cCheck Your Refund\u201d button.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Federal tax refund status best practices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Set yourself up for success by preparing some info in advance. Have your return on hand, since you\u2019ll need it to answer some questions. To check IRS refund status details, you\u2019ll need to provide your:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Social Security number (SSN) or another taxpayer identification number<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Filing status<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exact refund amount shown on the return<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What could cause my refund to be delayed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If the IRS still hasn&#8217;t accepted your return and issued a refund, you may be wondering what\u2019s causing the slowdown. Common reasons for a tax refund delay include if:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You claimed tax credits like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/filing\/credits\/earned-income-credit\/\">Earned Income Tax Credit<\/a> (EITC) or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/filing\/credits\/child-tax-credit\/\">Additional Child Tax Credit<\/a> and it is before mid-February. IRS does not begin releasing refunds with these credits until mid-February.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your return is incorrect or incomplete.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You filed an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/forms\/form-1040x-amended-tax-return\/\">amended tax return<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your return was sent by mail.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You filed late.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Someone else filed using your Social Security number.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Why is my refund less than expected?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While the average tax refund for the 2023 filing season was $3,167 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/newsroom\/filing-season-statistics-for-week-ending-dec-29-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to the IRS<\/a>, not everyone should expect that amount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/refunds-and-payments\/tax-refund-less-than-shown-on-return\/\">refund is less than expected<\/a>, there may be a few reasons for it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You have made a mathematical error or some other mistake on your return.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Treasury Offset Program intercepted your refund to pay past-due debts including:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Late federal or state taxes<ul><li>Back child support<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Past-due non-tax federal debts, like student loans<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You should receive a notice explaining the mistake or any adjustments and offsets made to your refund. It includes explanations of reductions for prior debts. Since your refund check and the notice can come from different IRS processing locations, you might receive the explanation after you receive the refund check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>What about my state tax refund?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar to federal tax refunds, the length of time it takes to get state refunds depends on how you file and choose to receive the money. Each state has its own timelines, so look on your state&#8217;s government tax website for a state tax refund status tool to check on the refund status.
