To keep interest and penalties to a minimum, taxpayers should file their tax return and pay any tax owed as soon as possible. If taxpayers are due a refund, there is no penalty if they file a late tax return.<\/p>\n<h2>More from H&amp;R Block<\/h2>\n<p>If you don\u2019t file a required tax return by the due date, the IRS will charge you a 5% per month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/audits-and-tax-notices\/tax-dictionary-failure-file-penalty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">penalty for failing to file<\/a>. If you owe taxes on the return, the IRS will also charge a 0.5% per month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/audits-and-tax-notices\/tax-dictionary-failure-pay-penalty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">failure to pay penalty<\/a>. Interest will also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/audits-and-tax-notices\/tax-dictionary-accrue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accrue<\/a> on any unpaid balance from the day the return was due until the date you pay the tax in full.<\/p>\n<p>The IRS can also file a return for you, called a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/audits-and-tax-notices\/tax-dictionary-substitute-return-sfr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">substitute for return<\/a> (SFR).
