But this is rare, unless you have a serious tax problem.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If the IRS is going to visit you, it\u2019s usually one of these people:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>IRS revenue agent:<\/strong>\u00a0This person conducts audits at your business or home.<\/li>\n<li><strong>IRS revenue officer:<\/strong>\u00a0This person collects back taxes and enforces the filing of back tax returns.\u00a0The IRS usually sends revenue officers to collect taxes when taxpayers haven\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/audits-and-tax-notices\/which-irs-payment-plan-is-best\/\">set up a payment agreement<\/a> with the IRS, and they owe a large amount of taxes (over $100,000 for an individual), back payroll taxes, and\/or have unfiled back tax returns.<\/li>\n<li><strong>IRS special agent:<\/strong>\u00a0 This person conducts IRS criminal investigations, usually for tax evasion.\u00a0The special agent usually visits with another agent.\u00a0Special agents can ask questions about your taxes, or they could be gathering evidence from you about another taxpayer \u2013 like someone you know or have done business or other transactions with.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>All three of these situations are rare<\/h2>\n<p>Revenue agents and revenue officers usually call or send a letter before they show up at your home or business. That\u2019s standard operating procedure, so that they spend their time productively with you. Special agents can show up unannounced.<\/p>\n<p>Many IRS impersonator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/irs\/tax-fraud\/irs-phone-scams\/\">scam calls<\/a> imitate one of these IRS employee titles. Impersonators say that you have a problem with your tax return and you need to pay immediately. Again, in these cases, you\u2019ll likely know well in advance that you have an issue with the IRS. The call won\u2019t come out of the blue.<\/p>\n<p>The answer here is just hang up. It\u2019s an IRS impersonator trying to scam you out of your money.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line: Yes, the IRS can visit you, but it won\u2019t be a surprise.
