However, that\u2019s not the case for everyone across the country. If you\u2019re a taxpayer in one of the seven states without an individual income tax, you are not required to prepare and file a state income tax return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tax-free-states\">Tax-free states<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The following are tax-free states (don\u2019t have income tax):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Alaska<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/filing\/states\/florida-tax-information\/\">Florida<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nevada<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>South Dakota<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/filing\/states\/taxes-in-texas\/\">Texas<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Washington<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wyoming<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tax-free-states-in-usa-excluding-dividends-and-interest-income\">Tax-free states in USA (excluding dividends and interest income)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the following are tax-free states in the USA that don\u2019t have income taxes for earned income, but they do tax dividend and interest income. This will phase out in future years, however, making the states both income tax free by 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>New Hampshire<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hrbcomlnp.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/filing\/states\/tennessee-taxes\/\">Tennessee<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-states-without-income-taxes-additional-considerations\">States without income taxes: Additional considerations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you live in a state without individual income taxes, you won\u2019t need to pay taxes on your wages or income from Social Security, pensions, or retirement plans, such as 401(k)s or an individual retirement account (IRA). However, taxpayers in these states are still subject to other types of taxes, including local taxes, property taxes, or sales taxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-so-what-are-the-best-states-for-taxes\">So, what are the best states for taxes?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming don\u2019t impose state income taxes, are they really the best states for taxes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because there are a number of additional state taxes imposed outside of income tax, the best states for taxes are really on a case by case basis. You must consider all taxes imposed, plus the cost of living in each state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, every state is different.
