{"id":45363,"date":"2019-06-05T15:37:12","date_gmt":"2019-06-05T20:37:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/resource-center.hrblock.com\/?p=45363"},"modified":"2019-06-05T15:37:12","modified_gmt":"2019-06-05T20:37:12","slug":"do-dependents-have-to-file-taxes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hrbcomlnp.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/filing\/dependents\/do-dependents-have-to-file-taxes\/","title":{"rendered":"Do I Need to File Taxes If I\u2019m a Dependent?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You\u2019ll need to file taxes if you\u2019re a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrblock.com\/tax-center\/filing\/dependents\/who-can-you-claim-as-a-dependent\/\">dependent<\/a> on someone else\u2019s tax return when you meet certain income criteria.<\/p>\n<p>Before reviewing the criteria, here\u2019s a quick overview of the types of income:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Earned income<\/b> includes salaries, wages, tips, professional fees, and taxable scholarships and fellowship grants.<\/li>\n<li><b>Unearned income<\/b> includes taxable interest, dividends, capital gain distributions, unemployment compensation, and taxable social security benefits, pensions, and annuities.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Gross income<\/b> is the total of your earned and unearned income.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Criteria for Filing Taxes as a Dependent in 2019<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re a single or married dependent under age 65, you need to file taxes if any of these are true:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unearned income more than $1,100<\/li>\n<li>Earned income more than $12,200<\/li>\n<li>Gross income more than $1,100 or earned income up to $11,850 \u2014 plus $350<\/li>\n<li>Gross income of at least $5, and you had a spouse who filed a separate return and itemized deductions (if married)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019re a single dependent over age 65, you have to file taxes if any of these are true:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unearned income more than $2,750 ($4,400 if over 65 and blind)<\/li>\n<li>Earned income more than $13,850 ($15,500 if over 65 and blind)<\/li>\n<li>Gross income more than the larger of $2,750 (or $4,400 if over 65 and blind), or earned income (up to $11,850) plus $2,000 (or $3,650 if over age 65 and blind)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019re a married dependent over age 65, you need to file taxes if any of these are true:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unearned income more than $2,400 ($3,700 if over 65 and blind)<\/li>\n<li>Earned income more than $13,500 ($14,800 if over 65 and blind)<\/li>\n<li>Gross income of at least $5, and you had a spouse who filed a separate return and itemized deductions<\/li>\n<li>Gross income more than the larger of $2,400 (or $3,700 if over 65 and blind), or earned income up to $11,850 plus $1,650 (or $2,950 if over 65 and blind)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even if you don&#8217;t have to file taxes as dependent, you might want to.
